Colin “Max” Roach
Max Roach grew up in the Sierra Mountains of Lake Tahoe,
Nevada. There, he developed a deep respect for nature and
an appreciation of a quiet mountain lifestyle. He felt “right
at home,” when he came to Wasatch Academy as a freshman
student in 1991. Mr. Roach enjoyed the support and nurturing
environment that the school provided and he excelled both
academically and artistically. He marks his years at Wasatch
Academy as representing a “turning point,” in
his development. Mr. Roach graduated from Wasatch Academy
with high honors in 1995.
Upon graduating from Wasatch Academy, Mr. Roach received
The Sterling Scholarship, a highly competitive honor that
afforded him full scholarships to all of Utah’s universities.
Four years later he received a B.A. in Education from Westminster
College’s School of Education. He then began his post-graduate
studies and earned an ESL Endorsement from the University
of Utah. Mr. Roach enjoyed working as a teacher within the
Salt Lake City School District. He was also honored to receive
a teaching position as an Adjunct Professor for the University
of Utah. His experience in training teachers for the University
of Utah’s School of Education has encouraged him to
pursue a Masters in Education.
Mr. Roach will teach four Learning Strategies classes and
two Aikido classes at Wasatch Academy. In the Learning Center
Mr. Roach works with students who benefit from extra support
in academics, study skills, and organization skills. Using
the Schools Attuned Program, he develops
neurological learning profiles for his students. Mr. Roach
works closely with students to help them understand, improve,
and “demystify” their own learning process.
Moving to Mt. Pleasant, this time with his wife Alethea
and son Aidan, represents a “coming home.” As
a member of the Wasatch Academy family, he looks forward
to giving back to his alma mater.
Another facet of Mr. Roach’s education is the study
of traditional Japanese martial arts. This too, he began
while a student at Wasatch Academy. Since then he has continued
to study and has gone on to train under some of Japan’s
top instructors. He currently teaches aikido (the way of
Harmony) and iaido (an art of meditative sword-drawing,
developed in the mid 1500’s). He holds the teaching
titles of Shidoin, 3rd Dan in both arts. He is also a Regional
Director of the Intermountain-Western US for the Kokusai
Budoin, Japan’s oldest extant martial arts federation.
Beyond his duties at Wasatch Academy, Mr. Roach also serves
as Chief Instructor and Director of Westminster College’s
Aikido Program.
